ABSTRACT

Hypophysitis describes infiltration and inflammation of the pituitary gland. The most common type is lymphocytic hypophysitis which can occur during the last months of pregnancy or early during the postpartum period. Hypophysitis frequently leads to diminished production of both anterior and posterior pituitary hormones and presents with symptoms including headache, visual field disturbances, and cranial nerve palsies. Treatment during pregnancy involves replacement of thyroid hormone and glucocorticoids as indicated based on laboratory evaluation, with high doses of steroids reserved for those who are experiencing severe headaches or worsening of vision.
