ABSTRACT

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), metabolic syndrome, and obesity often coexist and play significant roles in women’s reproductive health. Obesity and PCOS can hinder conception ability; thus, it is advised that women attempt to achieve a healthy weight prior to conception. The diagnoses of PCOS, metabolic syndrome, or obesity, alone or in combination, carry risk during pregnancy. Women with obesity have lower recommended gestational weight gain targets. To prevent excessive weight gain, patients with these conditions should be counseled on diet, physical activity, and behavior changes. Anti-obesity medications can be used before or after pregnancy but should not be used during pregnancy. Pregnant women with obesity may have special obstetrical needs to optimize the health and safety of mother and baby. There are several unique concerns to consider when caring for pregnant women who have had bariatric surgery.
