ABSTRACT

Biological control is part of modern techniques for controlling pests and can be used alone or as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Its use demands knowledge and awareness by those who use biological control, because of the usage of living organisms for the control of insect pests. In Brazil, the Diatraea saccharalis biological control program with the parasitoids Cotesia flavipes and Trichogramma galloi in sugarcane crop is considered one of the largest biocontrol programs in the world. Therefore, this chapter aims to demonstrate the importance of D. saccharalis biological control at sugarcane crop, in order to encourage producers to use this tool in cane fields. This chapter abords technical issues regarding the feasibility of using parasitoids, producers will need to acquire knowledge to properly use the biological control agents on their properties and make sure that are acquiring quality organisms through adequate monitoring assessments.
