ABSTRACT

Integration of various insect pest management options is important for maximizing the pest control efficacy, reducing the risk of resistance development insect populations, optimizing the crop yields, and minimizing potential negative impacts on the environment and human health. Using cultivars that tolerate or resist insects, inducing plant resistance to insects, manipulating cultural practices, exploring biological, mechanical or physical, and microbial control options, using mating disruption, and biological pesticides are some of the management options for integrated pest management (IPM). However, IPM is also influenced by social aspects such as the affordability of the consumer or their preference for certain quality or appearance of fruits and vegetables, and the knowledge of both producers and consumers about sustainable food production. This chapter presents an overview of various insect management strategies and the social impact on IPM practices.
