ABSTRACT

E.U. Reg. 1107/09about the authorization of plant protection products has reduced the number of chemically active substances available for crop protection and has opened a way for increasing use of bio-pesticides not only in organic agriculture but also in integrated and conventional agriculture. Currently, the authorization process of bio-pesticides does not differ from that of traditional agrochemicals and, in the absence of simplified authorization procedures, it is a strong obstacle for the development of new biorationals.

In general, the bio-pesticides available have lower efficacy than traditional agrochemicals so they need more attention in the application methods and must be included in combined strategies often in combination with traditional agrochemicals. Furthermore, although there are effective products for the control of different kinds of diseases and pests, there are many important pests for which there are still no applicable solutions. To solve such problems, it is necessary to invest in research and introduce simplified legislative procedures for biopesticides which in the future they will have to show sufficient efficacy, persistence, user-friendliness, long shelf-life and compatibility with chemical active when used in integrated pest and disease control strategies.
