ABSTRACT

Biopesticides have been available in the market for several decades and are an important part of integrated pest management programs (IPM) around the world. Although their market has been increasing in the recent past, compared to other pest management options, biopesticide use is still limited due to the lack of thorough knowledge of their modes of action or infection, proper storage and handling, and strategies for effective use. The relatively higher cost of biopesticides in comparison to conventional pesticides and limited information on their field efficacy and their role in IPM are other reasons for not considering biopesticides as mainstream pest management tools. Increased research and development of affordable and stable biopesticides and improved knowledge of their effective use will help overcome the challenges associated with biopesticides and promote their widespread use. This chapter will address the challenges and opportunities for popularizing biopesticides.
