ABSTRACT

The organic certification system is a quality assurance initiative that was developed in the early 1970s. There is an increasing interest in organic products all over the globe. Certification, there adds confidence in the marketplace. Globally, any producer needs to follow a certain set of standards and guidelines to produce and sell any product in the market. Likewise, the products that are claimed to be organic, need to be produced in a proper manner abiding with a set of regulations proposed by the certification bodies such as Codex Alimentarius, IFOAM, USDA, AROS, APEDA and the certification body corresponding to the respective countries. In this chapter, detailed information about the standards and certification systems that regulate organic produce has been delineated.
