ABSTRACT

With the rapid technological advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) and sensors, the applications of robots today are characterized by advanced mechanisms that could emulate human behaviors. One of the most challenging tasks in the development of a humanoid robot is the design and construction of its head. The development of a robot head often involves the design of a microcontroller circuit, sensors, motor drivers, as well as the frame. This chapter provides a detailed elaboration on the development of a simple android’s head. The construction of the robot head involves diverse engineering fields – ranging from the mechanical construction of its frame, the design of the electronic circuitries, and the development of algorithms to program AI into its microcontroller. The robot head proposed in this chapter is equipped with motion sensors and facial recognition algorithm. It is able to detect the presence of humans in its vicinity. Once it has locked to a fixed target, the head will then orientate its position to face its target. The robot head will subsequently run through an AI algorithm to recognize the countenance of its target. The details of its target will then be displayed if it matches that in the dataset.
