ABSTRACT

With new emerging technologies having a greater impact on the lives of human beings, there is an urge to move on to a smarter technology that incorporates both energy management and reduction in human intervention. Taking a step towards this transition is understanding occupant-building interactions which help in personalized energy and comfort management using the smart energy management system. In this chapter, a complete design for IoT-based energy management system is discussed and then discusses the implementation and also addresses the security issues and challenges with an emphasis on energy management. The objective of this work is to design a system to monitor the in-out activities of the visitors for maintaining the security of the laboratory and to solve occupancy detection problem. It aims in providing user identification through machine learning algorithm in hand-held devices and also monitors the motion of the occupants and light intensity, thereby controlling the devices. It has been developed where the power consumption for all the appliances is periodically computed, and data is uploaded in the cloud server. It has been shown in the outcomes that the proposed system reduces power consumption and human intervention to a greater extent, thereby aiding in efficient energy management.
