ABSTRACT

This chapter presents psychosocial sources of occupational stress among medical staff of psychiatric and addiction treatment wards working in direct contact with patients, in Poland. When analyzing psychosocial sources of stress in the work of medical staff of psychiatric wards, two lifestyle aspects that distinguish this occupational group should be taken into account, namely alcohol consumption and physical activity. Workplace health promotion is an organizational undertaking by enterprise management. Therefore, workplace health promotion constitutes a stress-coping support method addressed to employees, but also entailing an organizational change. Such an analysis results should be communicated to the company's staff, and the management should be obliged to continuously improve the workplace health-promotion methods. High emotional demands have proved to be the main stressor in the work of medical staff of psychiatric wards.
