ABSTRACT
This chapter presents a brief comparative study of water management and conflict in Brazil and the United States. The authors will first set forth some examples of situations in which diverse legislation and management models may influence the application of the conflict transformation framework discussed in this book. The chapter compares the overarching structure of governance and pertinent details of the Brazilian and American water resources management systems, before proceeding to four case studies illustrating water conflict. The comparison allows readers to identify the application of water conflict framework opportunities in the case examples and then to creatively theorize and flesh out more adequate or effective strategies to deal with those conflicts, thereby engaging in thought experiments that could enlarge the potential toolbox of approaches within the international water management and water conflict mediation communities.
