ABSTRACT

The marathon of innovation continues to move us towards a smart world where the runners represented as academic and industry researchers are aiming to win the competition by proposing novel and stunning innovations. Nowadays, fog and edge computing and blockchain technology are at the centre resulting in a high interest to the research community. Fog and edge computing have decentralised computing services by offloading tasks to the edge of the network; though such network paradigms have led to new opportunities and sophisticated services, attackers are developing new illicit methods to get access to personal information. Thus, it has become mandatory for researchers to focus more on reinforcing fog and edge architecture in terms of data confidentiality, data integrity, data availability, and data privacy. Furthermore, blockchain technology provides a set of overarching mechanisms, making it a potential candidate in offering security and privacy services. The deployment of blockchain technology in fog and edge architecture is definitively an interesting instrument to ensure secure communication between devices in the network and provide a resilient system against malicious attacks. The main focus of this chapter is to outline the key advantages of blockchain and how it can contribute to secure fog and edge computing and make this layer resilient against many types of attacks such as distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) and man-in-the-middle, just to few a name, and to preserve the privacy of the edge knowledge shared between Internet of Things (IoT) devices and fog and edge nodes.
