      ABSTRACT

The demand for secondary metabolites in the world is increasing day by day, because of its significant role in medicines. Different methods are used to obtain secondary metabolites from various plant and plant parts. The yield of secondary metabolites by using age old method is very low; there is an urgent need to update the technology that can enhance the production of secondary metabolites. The technology hydroponics is a most recent methodology for growing medicinal plants by using liquid mineral nutrients. It's a soilless culture of different types such as static solution culture, continuous-flow solution culture, aeroponics, fogponics etc. The high demand for secondary metabolites has created huge production opportunities in commercial farming by using hydroponics techniques. In this chapter, the history, different techniques and substrates of hydroponics cultivation for enhancing the secondary metabolites with various examples are attempted. The other aspects such as cost, tools and its importance for enhancing secondary metabolites are highlighted.
