ABSTRACT

Water is an essential element for all living beings on earth and water pollution is a hazard for the biotic ecosystems. The conventional water treatments like physical and chemical methods are relatively expensive and unreliable as they generate secondary pollutants and have detrimental effects. Bioremediation using natural biomaterials are used for better results. The integration of physico-chemical treatments with biomaterials provide eco-friendly results and are widely accepted. Coagulation is an important process in the treatment of water and wastewater and this is accomplished by the help of coagulant aids. The bio-based coagulant aid (biocoagulants) from different natural sources offers greater removal efficiency of potential water pollutants and ameliorates the water and waste water quality parameters. This chapter describes the importance of coagulation for the treatment of water and synthesis of biocoagulants from various biotic sources. Special emphases on plant-based coagulants and their functional attributes are comprehensively discussed.
