ABSTRACT

This research was motivated by the low social skills of the second-grade students in a private elementary school in Jatisampurna, Bekasi, Indonesia. Their low social skills were observed from the way they associated with their peers. Many children did not want to engage in group activities, as they preferred to do individual activities. This research aimed to determine the effects of the extent of smartphone use on social skills. The variables used in this study were the extent of the use of smartphones (X1) and social skills (X2). This study employed a quantitative approach with survey methods and path analysis techniques. It was conducted in grade 2 of a private elementary school in Jatisampurna, Bekasi from March to June 2019. The target population of this study was second-grade students in Jatisampurna Village who used smartphones, with a total of 50 pupils participating in the research. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling. The results show that the degree of smartphone use had a direct positive effect on social skills.
