ABSTRACT

In recent years, Indonesia has promoted equality and equity in education to ensure that all children including those with special needs obtain a quality education. In special schools, specially designed instruction that meets the unique needs of children with disabilities becomes the main concern. First, this article briefly reviews studies on special education. Second, it presents the current practice in teaching hearing impaired students including some challenges encountered by the English teacher in Indonesia. Finally, teaching English to hearing impaired students using a visual dictionary will be proposed.
