ABSTRACT

An academic writing textbook is one of the important elements supporting the success of student learning. In response to Industrial Revolution 4.0, textbooks used at the university level need to be examined. Textbooks help students to become superior and competitive citizens. Both nationalism and life skills are the main modalities to build high-quality citizens. There is a need to describe the contents of academic writing textbooks in several tertiary institutions. Field data were collected and analyzed to produce a complete description of the contents of a number of academic writing textbooks used at Muhammadiyah universities in Central Java, Indonesia. Based on the collected data, it can be concluded that nationalism has not been presented in academic writing textbooks, while competences and life skills are found in them.
