ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a description of concepts, principle, major methods and tools for the control of pest and vector mosquitos in addition to the terminology and components of Integrated Pest Management, Integrated Mosquito Management, Integrated Vector Management, and Best Management Practices. The most practical methods for prevention and control of adult mosquitos are Prevention and Personal Protection. This involves personal protective measures of wearing long sleeves shirts and pants, avoiding outdoor activity at peak mosquito activity (usually dawn and dusk), and applying insect repellents such as DEET, Picaridin, or para-menthane-3,8-diol. Based on the multitude of known breeding habitats of pest and vector species, the emphasis of mosquito control is divided into the sectors of container-breeder mosquito management, waste water or storm drain mosquito management, floodwater mosquito management, salt marsh mosquito management, and rice field mosquito management.
