ABSTRACT

Conducting polymers are aptly known as a fascinating product of the material science and engineering arena. Their splendid properties have led to their versatility in every field of research involving engineering, from electronics to biomedical applications. In the biomedical arena, they find application in drug release, biosensors, and tissue engineering, as well as stimuli-responsive biomimetic polymeric materials. Apart from the biocompatibility, microstructures, and mechanical characteristics, electrical conductivity with electroactivity plays an important role for all the applications. The chapter discusses fundamentally the conductivity of the conducting polymers, their classification, and applications. How the variation in conducting properties with change in the environment alters the application and formulation of safe composites is discussed in relation to biomedical applications.
