ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a comprehensive review and assessment of the 5G capabilities in terms of supporting the features of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications. Various intelligent transportation system applications desire advanced wireless access schemes that can support UAV to UAV and UAV- to-infrastructure communications. Today, wireless access for vehicular environment that uses a dedicated short-range communication protocol, LTE, and many other wireless communication technologies, have played key roles in the development of future ITSs. Moreover, some features are available in 5G, such as edgeless connectivity and new methods of establishing a connection, e.g., multi-hop communication, to lengthen the coverage, and inherently support effective D2D connections. 5G cellular network is able to support large amounts of data traffic, and many novel communication models and platforms are being developed to enable the 5G network to function efficiently for the complex UAV applications.
