ABSTRACT

The global trend in population growth has placed more demand on effective ways of achieving good environmental management practices using sustainable technologies. The coffee processing industry is one of the agro-based industries that contributes immensely to the pollution of the ambient environment. Scientifically, coffee belongs to the genus Coffea from the Rubiaceae family, and its seeds are called coffee beans or berries. The constituents of coffee processing wastewater include many toxic chemicals such as polyphenols, tannins, and caffeine. Effects of CPW are seen in the depletion of oxygen level in water essential for biological breakdown of organic waste, consequently creating anaerobic conditions to the detriment of aquatic habitats. The variations in the concentrations of the parameters in the processing stages are due to reasons including the different volumes of water used during the process, the species of coffee processed, and so on.
