ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the fundamental relationship between motorized road traffic and the resulting pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions in the context of traffic flow and its impact on humans and the environment. The text addresses energy consumption of road-traffic vehicles, quantification and types of emissions, and the fundamentals of traffic and emission modeling for large networks. Emission reduction strategies are presented from three different approaches: (1) technical measures for vehicles, (2) impacts of traffic planning and traffic management measures, and (3) economic policy and user-related measures.
