ABSTRACT

A healthy food environment is increasingly considered to be an important component of improving food choice and in turn health, both by public health nutritionists and policy makers. Definitions vary of what is included in food environments depending on different viewpoints. However, it is generally agreed that significant progress is needed before we can consider our food environment to be healthy. This book is separated into two main parts. The first part covers different places that we inhabit where food is sold or served and also how nutritional information is presented to us in the media – in newspapers as well as online in social media. The second part of the book includes information on different types of actions that can be employed to improve food environments. It is based on the ladder of interventions published in 2007 by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. It considers the strength of the evidence available or justification for action as well as taking into account the acceptability or popularity of public health policies. In summary, this book provides detailed information on how we can improve our food environment to ensure good access to tasty, healthy and sustainable food at an affordable price for everyone.
