ABSTRACT

The internet of thing (IoT) is the backbone of the technically interconnected world. With its tremendous growth and popularity in the last two decades, there is a huge requirement for an infrastructure that can foster massive amounts of data transmission at very high bandwidth and low latency efficiently. Advances in network technology and rapid evolution of the fifth-generation cellular network enable the processing of large amounts of data generated by enormous sensors in the framework of the IoT. The 5G networks have the potential to transform today’s IoT, strengthening IoT security, boosting cellular operations, solving network challenges and expanding the limits of the Internet. This chapter describes the opportunities and limitations of 5G and IoT. Three tools—Adaptive IP, 5G Automation and OpenBalena—which enable the 5G and IoT ecosystem are also presented, with an outline of their purpose, functionalities and requirements.
