ABSTRACT

The Internet of Things (IoT) contains electronic and embedded devices such as refrigerators, mobiles, kitchen appliances, etc., that are interconnected over the internet for data sharing. A wide range of applications and services have been provided by IoT including smart tracking, real-time monitoring and analytics. A great deal of money has been spent and research initiated by big companies like Google and Microsoft on implementation of the major application areas of IoT, including smart homes, smart cities and smart hospitals. This chapter introduces the IoT and examines its role in smart technologies such as smart home and appliances, the communication protocols for network connectivity and security defects in present communication protocols for IoT-enabled devices.
