ABSTRACT

The effects of urbansation on global warming are among the most pressing 21st-century environmental emergencies. However, only recently visualisation techniques have provided city administrators with tools to advance heat mitigation plans in cities. In line with this recent effort, this chapter connects the engineering literature on urban heat islands (UHI) to data-visualisation practices. More specifically, it offers a literature review on data visualisation for policy-making. Then, it turns to the case study of Jeddah (KSA) to illustrate how to visualise UHI effects for urban design interventions. Finally, it elaborates on the notion of “Heat Equity” and the use of web-based UHI platforms.
