ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the journey from the traditional grid to the smart grid. It highlights the benefits of smart grid system. The chapter describes the standards and technologies for smart grids. It highlights issues and challenges in implementing a smart grid. The open research questions and future research directions are also discussed. In the early stage, power was generated by DC source and grids were isolated from the load, therefore DC power is transmitted over a short distance only because of higher power loss in the transmission line. Traditional power grids face a lot of challenges in managing power system especially in the generation, transmission, and distribution. Many researchers have reported the importance of having standards for smart grid. The information and communication technology helps to operate the power networking system incorporation with the SCADA model.
