ABSTRACT

Perceiving a vehicle's environment is a fundamental requirement for the establishment of the autonomy of that vehicle. Interpretation of environment encourages the machine learning algorithms and other artificial intelligence-based techniques that allow autonomous vehicles to learn from sensory data and make decisions accordingly. In the scope of this chapter, the key concept of mapping and localizing (SLAM) with recognition and tracing of moving objects in the context of dynamic outdoor environments is discussed. Apparently, the accomplishment of these tasks in real time will unlock an enormous range of latent automotive applications. The objective of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive overview of the contemporary developments related to navigation system, design, and safety issues for autonomous vehicle systems.
