ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a study that was conducted in an area about 41,677 hectares in the Mian-Ab Plain in Khuzestan Province, southwest of Iran, during 2010–2011. The study area is located 40 km northwest of the city of Ahvaz, 31° 38' to 32° 04' N and 48° 45' to 49° 01' E. The average annual temperature and precipitation for the period of 1959–2009 were 25.30°C and 335.70 mm, respectively. The application of irrigated agriculture has been common in the study area. The semi-detailed soil survey report of the Mian-Ab Plain was used in order to determine the soil characteristics. Over much of the Mian-Ab Plain, the use of surface irrigation systems has been applied specifically for field crops to meet the water demand of both summer and winter crops. There are very few instances of sprinkle and drip irrigation on large-area farms in the Mian-Ab Plain. The slope, soil texture, soil depth, calcium carbonate, salinity, and drainage were all in desirable conditions.
