ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a study that was conducted in an area about 63,525 hectares in the Khalf Abad Plain in Khuzestan Province, located in the southwest of Iran, during 2011–2012. The study area is located 80 km west of the city of Ahvaz, 30° 40' to 31° 00' N and 49° 00' to 49° 30' E. The average annual temperature and precipitation for the period of 1965–2011 were 24.42°C and 218.9 mm, respectively. Currently, the irrigation systems used by farmlands in the region are furrow irrigation, basin irrigation, and border irrigation schemes. The semi-detailed soil survey report of the Khalf Abad Plain was used in order to determine the soil characteristics. Over much of the Khalf Abad Plain, the use of surface irrigation systems has been applied specifically for field crops to meet the water demand of both summer and winter crops.
