ABSTRACT

This chapter shows the different aspects of Chenopodium ambrosioides including the development and evolution of knowledge about botanical, systematic, phytogeographical, ethnopharmacological, phytochemical and biological applications. It begins with the systematic approach and botanical classification, covering topics related to phytogeography and phylogeny of the species. Traditional uses and ethnopharmacological aspects are also reported, with an emphasis on traditional knowledge and its relationship with the foundations of their cultures. Traditional knowledge involves specific knowledge and techniques for hunting, agriculture, traditional medicine, among others, which were developed empirically by communities and are perpetuated throughout the generations. The phytochemical approach describes the main chemical compounds and their relationship with the techniques of extraction and geographical distribution. C. ambrosioides or Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) S. L. Mosyakin & S. E. Clemants is a medicinal plant with a social impact, which is found in several places around the world.
