ABSTRACT

Natural prodrugs are the chemical substances or compounds obtained from living species like plants, animals, microorganisms, and marine sources. Modern-day natural products in practical applications are small molecules modified with the aid of chemical synthesis and utilized for therapy, fortified food, the element of drug discovery, and for various healing purposes. Most of the medication for diverse sicknesses metabolizes rapidly by the process of first-pass effect that consequently results in drug inactivation, and formation of harmful or poisonous metabolites in the human body. Most of the prodrugs obtained from natural sources like plants, animals, and marine resources, specifically undergo chemical transformation into non-toxic compounds, in addition to prevention from complete drug inactivation. The chapter highlights some of the updates on prodrugs obtained from natural products.
