ABSTRACT

The demand for information technology (IT) in every sphere of life and automation in various sectors has significantly increased the need for various computing devices. Consequently, the amount of energy and electricity consumed by these devices is escalating, which increases the carbon content of the atmosphere and raises the energy costs of the IT industry around the world. The concerning increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide has led to the adoption of more eco-friendly and energy-efficient green computing. This chapter examines various approaches to green computing such as through virtualization, cloud computing, and green data centers. Additionally, this chapter discusses minimizing e-waste through the proper recycling of electronic components. Finally, Indian companies taking an initiative toward green computing are highlighted. This chapter ends with a discussion of obstacles to implementing green computing, and points out future directions of research in this important area.
