ABSTRACT

The twenty-first century has seen a remarkable increase in, and application of, technology in diverse fields that have directly impacted society’s development and the growth of industry. This has been possible due to the rapid advancement in connectivity, both digitally and physically. Digital expansion has been achieved through developing high-speed connectivity networks and devices and making them available among the masses. Physical point-to-point connectivity is possible through the infrastructural development of road networks. However, developing road networks is expensive, time consuming, and suffers from legal complications associated with land acquisition. This has prompted an exponential increase in vehicular traffic existing road spaces, which, in turn, has led to the concept of vehicle sharing to reduce the vehicular load. This chapter discusses carpooling as an effective Go-Green solution for sustainable development through its features, benefits, and variations. Graphical charts showcase the growth of carpooling. A detailed study and comparison have been performed on the SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis of popular carpool service providers.
