ABSTRACT

The disclosure of environmental issues is gaining momentum in the corporate world. Globally and locally, the world is challenged by natural and human-made environmental disasters, such as toxic gas leaks such as Union Carbide’s methyl isocyanate leak in Bhopal, India, landslides, pollution, and others. These disclosures have created greater awareness among various groups of stakeholders who have varying objectives and expectations, such as employees, shareholders, the public, regulators, contractors/suppliers, customers, and other interested parties. In addition to drawing attention to environmental disasters and the depletion of natural resources, media coverage and rising public awareness have led to increasing societal attention on getting businesses to assume responsibility for their actions. This responsibility can be addressed through environmental reporting and disclosures, which assures the stakeholders that corporations are accountable for their environmental activities. Effective environmental reporting is crucial. The focus of this study is to analyze and compare the level of annual report disclosures with respect to environmental activities for companies in India’s mining sector for the periods from 2014 to 2015 and from 2018 to 2019 using a constructed disclosure index.
