ABSTRACT

To meet the globally rising demand for fresh perishable commodities, there is a need for effective and efficient transportation from production point to consumption. Refrigerated marine containers allow high-demand products to be transported under temperature-controlled conditions while maintaining optimum quality. During the transport of fresh produce in marine reefer containers, proper temperature management and compliance with the cold chain are crucial. A controlled atmosphere (CA) is the best supplement to proper temperature management to extend the potential transit life for new and more distant markets. This chapter will include topics on the importance of following best postharvest practices, dos and don’ts of refrigerated marine reefer transport, ways to maintain optimum product temperature during transit, and success stories on the use of CA technology to extend the transit life potential of fresh produce during refrigerated ocean transport.
