ABSTRACT

Promoting better linkages and improved communication among the many actors in the agro-industrial sector would serve to reduce duplication of efforts and increase the adoption of cost-effective cold chain development practices. Effective communication, coordination and collaboration among research, extension and industry personnel involved in the postharvest system and the development of the cold chain are the foundations of any successful plan towards an efficient supply chain and reduction of losses in fresh produce. In most cases, the solutions to existing food loss, quality and food safety problems will require the use of already available information and the application of appropriate existing cold chain technologies and logistics, rather than conducting new research or developing new technologies. This chapter will highlight key policy issues and strategies and provide several case studies on investments in best practices.
