ABSTRACT

As the world is rapidly changing towards modernization, humans are becoming more aware of the environment and sustainability. People are shifting from using harsh chemicals to more natural and safer ingredients. In cosmeceutical products, surfactants are usually added to act as surface-active properties to improve the formulation texture. Natural-based surfactants can be derived either from plants or microorganisms. Each of the surfactant extracted from different sources exhibits different strength of the emulsion formulation. Therefore, various studies have been conducted on the extraction of biosurfactants from natural-based materials, whereas the characterization of their properties were compared with synthetic surfactants. Generally, the performance of biosurfactants obtained has shown a promising result towards efficient and successful application in various industries. This article focused on plant and microbial-based biosurfactants together with their challenges and potential applications in cosmetic formulations.
