ABSTRACT

Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of interconnected devices and systems communicating with each other wirelessly. This network of devices works primarily through sensors and actuators. This network of devices helps in controlling and coordinating activities that previously needed human intervention. This system works independently and notifies the human attendant of the normal state or alerts them if an urgency arises that needs human intervention. Such systems produce large amounts of data that can be used for deriving insights and patterns from the systems about their workings. This is where artificial intelligence (AI) comes into play. AI technologies can help derive patterns from the data collected and stored by IoT devices. Such IoT devices can be called Intelligent IoT or Smart IoT. These patterns can then be used for training machines to convert them into learning systems that are able to assist their human counterparts at all times. This chapter describes how AI can enable an IoT device, making it a Smart IoT. We shall be elaborating the components of the Smart IoT, the technologies that enable a Smart IoT, and the various real-life Use Cases where AI has interfaced with IoT and delivered the expected automation and results.
