ABSTRACT

With technological advancement, Internet of Things (IoT) has given rise to exponential growth in the number of connected devices. These devices transmit a huge amount of data that helps business organizations in tracking their competitors, assets, customers, and other stakeholders. In order to process this data, big data analytics collaborates with IoT. Together, they support business organizations in capturing and monitoring their various stakeholders and take proactive and corrective actions timely. Together, they have the potential to facilitate the platform from a smart world to smart cities and finally to smart homes. A smart city aims to bring more comfortable and secure day-to day living to its residents. The smart city concept is entirely dependent on IoT and big data. In order to create smart city services, we need to analyze data received from all major stakeholders such as city officials, the private sector, city citizens, along with massive data streams captured from IoT devices and big data platforms. On similar lines, the authors have proposed a framework for a Smart Connected Restaurant Management System (SCRMS) that can be used for effectively creating a smart restaurant. The proposed framework for a smart restaurant has services for enabling artificial intelligence (AI) services, big data analytics services, and infrastructure management services and can be used for deriving insights and predicting trends for the restaurant or chain of restaurants. This chapter discusses the similarities and differences among IoT and big data technologies. The role of big data analytics is explained along with the comparative view on the tools used. Finally, a real-time case study of a smart city is discussed where big data analytics can be seen in practice.
