ABSTRACT

According to the literature survey of recent years, pullulan has gathered interest from various researchers. In this chapter, it is clarified that pullulan, a unique polymer, is used exclusively for biomedical application since its characteristics are tapped to possess high potential. Moreover, special attention is given to complex hydrocarbon polymers developed from bacteria and fungi, especially polysaccharides such as chitin, xanthan, pullulan, and so on. According to the application, pullulan is considered a suitable agent in GRAS status in the United States. The glucose units obtained as a result require the availability of three essential enzymes that convert into pullulan. Modified pullulan derivatives are analyzed only for in vitro studies. In research studies, the focus is primarily on the in vivo ability of pullulan and its derivatives, and cationized pullulan is one such derivative that has been established as an efficient gene carrier for in vivo studies.
