ABSTRACT

Schools are an integral part of a child’s learning and development. They are touted as premises that foster the student’s many capabilities be it academic, social, or emotional. Schools endeavor to create an environment that aids in the positive development of the students; however, with the changing milieu, they are increasingly becoming a setting which harbors elements that can be detrimental for a student’s growth and development. An increase in issues like academic pressure, body shaming, bullying to name a few, have led to deterioration in the psychosocial and behavioral adjustment of the students. Such an environment then no longer seems to play a protective role in the student’s life. Acknowledging the influence of this environment as well as the factors that are at play would help us focus on the systematic as well as the individual change which is required. This would then help in drawing attention toward seeking pathways to change the environment for the students. An important factor that can help alleviate the difficulties that the students are going through is resilience. Promoting resilience in the students would empower them to develop mechanisms that would act as protective factors against experiences that could otherwise prove to be overwhelming for them. Espousing resilience in the school setting will enable the students to maintain a balance in their lives and thrive even when the circumstances seem tough. The present chapter aims at highlighting these pressing issues within the school environment that tend to impede the development of the students. The chapter aims to explore a whole-school approach of building resilience.
