ABSTRACT

Community emphasizes the common ties and social interaction component. It is characterized not so much by locale as by a “high degree of personal intimacy, emotional depth, moral commitment, social cohesion and continuity in time.” Permanent dwellers of a locality generally live together in such a way that they share the basic conditions of community life and develop a strong positive feeling for the locality which finally becomes a part of their respective identities. The place one lives in or the places one relates to, thus, form an extended identity of an individual. In difficult times, the place identity of an individual as well a community can also act as an agent contributing to coping and resilience (or bouncing back from adversities with a growth mindset). This chapter is an attempt to understand community resilience, and the contribution of place identity in it. Units of society—whether individuals or community, who are highly resilient can exhibit adaptive coping skill and deal with the environment more skillfully. When one has a sense of belongingness to an identified community, chances of anticipation of receiving resources from environment are more. But the intertwined nature of a community and the place they dwell in cannot be denied. Thus, the place identity becomes integral in community resilience.
