ABSTRACT

Theuseofautomobilesasamajorsourceoftransportationhasresultedintheaccumulationofhazardouspollutantsintheenvironment.Oneofthemostimportantconstituentsamongmanypollutantsishydrocarbon.Thepollutionofthesoilwithhydrocarbonisanenvironmentalconcern,asthecontaminatedsoilsmaybeinappropriateforagricultural,industrial,orrecreationaluseandalsopossiblesourcesforsurfaceandgroundwateradulteration.Inordertopreventdestructionofthecontaminatedecosystemitshouldundergoasystematictreatmentprocess.Apromisingtreatmenttechniqueforthehydrocarbondegradationincontaminatedsoilismicrobialbioremediation.Itinvolvesthebreakdownoforganicpollutantsandthechemicalbondswiththeuseofawiderangeofmicroorganisms.Theindigenousmicroorganismshavethecapabilitytoconsumethehydrocarboncontaminantspresentinsoilasacarbonsourceforenergyandnutrients.Itisalow-cost,eco-friendlytechniquewithminimumimpactontheenvironment,andcanoftenbecarriedoutonsite.
