ABSTRACT

The research into applications of artificial intelligence in statistics carried out in the last decade has resulted in numerous papers describing hypothetical or toy statistical expert systems and a number of working demonstration prototypes. However, few of these systems have become available to the general public, among them, Hand's (1987) system KENS and also GLIMPSE (see, for example, Wolstenholme et al, 1988). Nevertheless, interest in the development of more intelligent statistical software is still going strong and valuable contributions are being delivered at several academic and other research institutes.
