ABSTRACT

The great efficiency of vacuum insulated elements concerning heat insulation has been well known for a long time. In different fields of technical equipment as for example in refrigerators, freezing rooms and freezing plants, such elements are frequently used. In the field of building construction the situation is a plainly different one: Here the vacuum insulation technology stands at the beginning of a promising future. This article explains some of the possibilities of implementing vacuum insulated elements into different building constructions. Obviously, these constructions cannot present the so called tried and tested status and therefore this article shows actual results of different research and development projects.

The topics covered in this article are firstly the integration of vacuum insulated elements in the building envelope. Secondly the problem concerning thermal bridges is discussed. Thirdly, some aspects of the outstanding load-bearing capacity of VIS elements are explained in detail. At last, some basics on economical advantages of vacuum insulation over conventional insulation are mentioned.
