ABSTRACT

A methodology to assess the energy use for space heating of buildings was developed and applied to predict the energy demand of about 120 high schools in the Province of Torino.

The procedure is based on metered consumptions analyses for a number of heating seasons: both primary energy and generated thermal energy are to be collected to evaluate the consistency of the average generation efficiency. Energy consumptions should be normalized to enable an effective comparison of different buildings.

The methodology, applied to the consumptions of the examined sample from 2000 to 2003, was then used to predict the energy consumption during 2003–04 heating season. Hence, the procedure was validated through the comparison of calculated and metered energy use, which is the main focus of the paper.

Some correlations are pointed out between the actual energy consumption and different parameters use to characterize the system and the boundary conditions.
