ABSTRACT

A thin plate is usually employed as a main member of mechanical structures. The deformational behavior against compressive load depends on not only the mechanical properties but also the configuration of the structure because of buckling or collapse. Thus, a thin plate usually used with installing reinforcements against compression loads, for example, beads, ribs etc. However, the effect of these reinforcements for a rectangular plate has not been clarified against the shearing force. In this study, the experiment of rectangular plates with various dimensions is carried out under a simple shearing condition. The purpose of this research is to clear how the aspect ratio (width versus length) and thickness ratio (thickness versus width) affect to the buckling phenomenon. The effective reinforcement and its arrangement are discussed. In addition, the newly proposed measuring method, adapted for measuring the lateral deformation of a rectangular plate, is proposed in this paper.
