ABSTRACT

Durability of pavement materials can be substantially improved using the technique of impregnation with water-soluble sulphur developed in the Scientific Research Institute of Small-Scale Chemicals and Reagents “NIIReaktiv”. The process includes transformation of crude sulphur into a water-soluble form and using the solution as the starting material for the hydrophobization agent. “NIIReaktiv” has developed and is now offering two types of the hydrophobization agent: the one intended for in-depth impregnation of concrete pavement and the other one - for surface impregnation. The agents and the impregnation technologies have been patented in the Russian Federation. The impregnation with water-soluble sulphur makes pavement materials highly waterproof and somewhat more resistant to chemically aggressive medium. This results in highly durable pavement materials for both harsh weather conditions prevailing in the local area and aggressive environments found in large-scale chemical and petrochemical plants. The technology targets not only pavements but also decorative facing stone and construction materials for exterior walls.
