ABSTRACT

Construction of a lining system in unfavourable weather conditions may cause deterioration such as shrinkage, cracking and mineral lining softening as well as extreme wave formation in plastic liners. The wish to underline this fact in order to avoid the occurrence of situations whereby discussion on improvement of minor details is started in July and thereby delays the beginning of construction by months. In order to limit the negative effects of heavy rainfall during the construction phase, the provision of suitable drainage conditions is of the utmost importance and adequately dimensioned drains should be provided. In addition to the observance of minimum gradients, a minimum slope of 3% is required for rapid drainage of plain surfaces, especially during the construction phase. The requirements outlined above are specified and described in further detail in the following paragraphs: these regard the monolandfill of Berlin-Kladow and the hazardous waste disposal site of Billigheim, both in Germany.
